Stay at home
Mar. 18th, 2020 08:26 pmJesus fucking Christ, they did it.
They closed all stores except for those selling food and medicines.
Until the end of the month (presumably).
On the other hand, during the last few days all these stores had no customers at all, so I don't think they will be losing more money now - someone had to pay for electricity, cleaning etc anyway, while their staff was just doing nothing, sitting there and staring into their smartphones.
All cafes, includig McDonalds and alike, are working only as take-away.
All hotels (!!!) are also closed till the end of April (at least).
But food stores now will be opened from 7AM till 11PM throughout the whole week, because they are obliged to limit the number of customers who can be inside simultaneously.
Athens are fucking completely empty now.
Even sellers of koulouri dissapeared!!! You can't buy koulouri in the streets of Athens anymore!!! That's how bad the situation is.
The advertisements also dissapeared, both from metro and bus-stops. Who would pay for advertisement nobody will see anyway. Billboard boxes are empty, though occasionally you can notice billboard with popular "social advertisement" you can see now everywhere - "Stay at home".
Judging by what people around say, this shit will continue at least till the end of April, although those more pessimistic believe it will only end in June. In fucking June. Wow, fucking wow.
Athens are really dead and empty now, after six o'clock you can hardly meet anyone in the street.
While I was walking around the city during daytime, I've seen a few groups of reporters representing different news channels. In fact, I've seen them literally on every corner, some were interviewing passerbys, while others just making reportages. They were clearly making reports about the empty city, what else can I say. Also, I was surely not the only photographer taking questionable advantage of this questionable situation.
In fact, I think half of the people I met were either news reporters or photographers filming the empty city.
As for the bums, I've seen a group of volunteers going from one beggar to the other. They were handing out food and... *drumroll* TOILET PAPER, of course. Jeez! They were really carrying around bags of food and packs of toilet paper. Like, come on, guys, how more stupid can this toilet paper hystery get? Like, you are buying this fucking paper for yourself, but handing it out to the bums? Like really? Fucking unbelieveable. And yes, I took photos of this too.
As for the other news, it seems the EU closed yesterday its borders for non-EU citizens, like Russia closing its borders a few days ago was not enough.
Also, everybody coming from abroad to Greece (which now means only citizens of EU, of course, and the fucking "refugees") will be home-quarantined for two weeks, although I don't know what do they mean by that. Like, what is home quarantine? What does it look like? What if I have no home at all? Will I be given a free shelter with free food and free wi-fi? I have no fucking idea. But certainly it would be fucking nice, I mean free shelter and food.
There are also rumours that half of Athens population left the city due to the fear of coronavirus and fled to the islands.
And when you walk around this empty city you think that maybe it's not even a joke.
Maybe those pickpockets who lost their job due to the lack of crowds will find another one, and maybe it will be even better.
Crisis is the time of opportunities, oh yeah.
